A cold-climate heat-pump design has to match the building load, distribution options, electrical capacity and backup-heat plan. In Sandwich, equipment and piping routes should respect old framing, masonry, plaster and visible exterior character. Durfee Plumbing & Heating provides heat-pump installation in Sandwich, Massachusetts for ducted, ductless and dual-fuel heating and cooling systems. A cold-climate heat pump can reduce fossil-fuel use while delivering dependable year-round comfort, but it must be selected around the home's heating and cooling loads, existing distribution, electrical service, outdoor-unit location and backup-heat strategy. We design the system around how the property is used and explain the practical equipment paths before installation begins.
Sandwich heating service
Include whether the property is in Sandwich Village, East Sandwich or Forestdale. For repair, describe the heating fault and access to the boiler, furnace or room units. For installation, discuss removal and delivery routes, protection of older finishes, venting and existing ducts or radiation before approving the scope. Identify finished basements or storage that could limit access.
If an existing heat pump stops heating, shuts down or relies on backup heat, share the model, symptoms and affected rooms. Arrange diagnosis before deciding whether to replace it.

Local planning
Sandwich combines the Cape's oldest historic village with East Sandwich coastal homes, Forestdale neighborhoods and a largely year-round single-family housing base. Sandwich properties include historic homes, newer subdivisions and upper-Cape properties. The Cape Cod Commission's 2026 profile identifies about 90% of Sandwich residential properties as single-family, with more than half of the housing stock built from 1975–1999 and only about 13% used seasonally. Mechanical needs therefore range from careful work in very old structures to replacement of systems installed during late-century subdivision growth. We review these conditions when planning equipment access, capacity and installation.

Repair, replacement & planning
Before work begins, we review equipment sizing, existing connections, access and the steps needed to start up and test the finished system.
A heat pump should be selected for the actual heating and cooling demands of the Sandwich property. Existing equipment size is a useful reference, but it may not reflect insulation upgrades, additions, duct limitations or historic oversizing. Durfee reviews the relevant conditions before recommending capacity, system type and a backup strategy.
Many homes can use more than one heat-pump approach. A ducted system may build on usable distribution; a ductless system may suit additions or homes without ducts; and a dual-fuel design may retain a serviceable furnace as low-temperature backup. The best route is determined by access, comfort goals, fuel strategy, equipment condition and budget.
The outdoor unit needs a stable, serviceable location with clearance for weather, drainage and airflow. Durfee considers site access, snow management, condensate, sound, line-set routing and exposure before finalizing the installation. This planning is especially important for reliable winter operation and routine service.

Equipment and piping routes should respect old framing, masonry, plaster and visible exterior character.
Duct leakage, insulation and return-air capacity should be checked before connecting new high-efficiency equipment.
Your Sandwich property brief
Identify the rooms to be served, existing heat source and proposed outdoor position. The final design requires a load assessment and review of distribution and electrical capacity.
A replacement may fit the room but require a different connection path. Identify finished ceilings, chimney connections and tight stairways early so the scope includes necessary access and restoration responsibilities.
Send the property address, equipment label, access photographs and the rooms or fixtures affected. Tell us who can provide entry and when a service interruption is possible.
