Repair it or replace it? Start with the diagnosis.
Compare the confirmed problem, the equipment’s condition and the complete scope before choosing your next step. Use this guide when discussing a boiler, furnace, heat pump or water heater with Durfee.
Discuss your propertyNo heat? · No hot water? For urgent loss of service, call (508) 217-7090 to confirm availability.
One symptom can have several causes.
No heat does not automatically mean a new furnace. At our Mashpee Lennox service call, a full system diagnosis traced the problem to a bad wire within the harness, and the repair restored heat. Other properties need replacement equipment. The decision follows the fault and the condition of the system.
Ask what failed, what the proposed work addresses and whether other issues remain. Compare the repair price with the installed replacement scope and your plans for the property. Age alone is not a diagnosis.
What to discuss for your system.
| System | When discussing a repair | When discussing replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Water heaters | A diagnosed repairable component, the tank’s condition, hot-water delivery and the proposed repair cost. | Tank condition, recurring problems, household demand, equipment options, space and connection requirements. |
| Boilers | The confirmed fault, whether one zone or the whole system is affected, connected controls and parts availability. | Equipment condition, recurring failures, the heating requirement and how the boiler connects to the existing distribution. |
| Furnaces | The diagnosed electrical, control, ignition or airflow fault and whether the proposed repair addresses it. | Equipment condition, repeated faults, ductwork, heating requirements and the complete replacement scope. |
| Heat pumps & ductless systems | The confirmed fault, equipment condition, available parts and any applicable coverage. | Room requirements, existing distribution, indoor/outdoor placement, installation scope and any backup-heat needs. |
These are discussion points, not a remote diagnosis. A technician needs to assess the actual equipment and installation.
How Durfee prepares pricing.
How do repair estimates, flat-rate pricing and diagnostic fees work?
Repair estimates require a site visit, and the visit is included in the diagnostic fee. After diagnosing the problem, Durfee presents upfront flat-rate pricing for the proposed work before you approve it. The diagnostic fee is credited toward approved work when the applicable minimums are met. The team explains the qualifying minimum and credit when arranging service.
How are heating and cooling system-replacement quotes prepared?
Heating and cooling system-replacement quotes are prepared onsite. Durfee uses the latest heat-loss calculation technology to assess the building's heating requirements and accurately size replacement heating equipment. We also review the existing system, distribution, cooling needs and installation conditions as applicable before recommending equipment and presenting the scope and price.
Can I get water-heater pricing by text?
Yes. Text (508) 217-7090 for water-heater pricing. Send photos of the existing water heater, its model label, the surrounding space and visible connections, along with the property town. Let us know whether you want a tank or tankless option. Durfee reviews the information and explains the equipment and installation scope with the price.
Equipment, access, existing connections, changes to piping or distribution, venting and the agreed work all affect the scope. Compare what is included before comparing totals.

Compare warranty, financing and incentives separately.
Manufacturer coverage and contractor labor coverage can have different conditions. Ask for the terms for your exact equipment and proposed work, including registration, maintenance and exclusions. Keep the installation records with your equipment documents.
For payment options, visit Durfee’s financing page and review the lender’s current terms. Financing approval and program eligibility are separate from the equipment recommendation.
Check current Mass Save offers and Cape Light Compact programs for your address and proposed equipment. Confirm eligibility, any preapproval and required documents directly with the program before relying on an incentive. Program rules change.
